By Ryan McKeelJun 12, 2018
Father's Day is just around the corner, and it is a universal truth that dads are notoriously difficult to get gifts for. If you're finding yourself struggling with what to get the father figure in your life, look no further because we have a lineup of fantastic shows that are sure to please any dad, grandfather, husband and more!
BRIGHT STAR, June 26-July 1
From Grammy, Emmy and Academy Award-winning Steve Martin (who is also known for his laugh-out-loud scenes in Saturday Night Live and several slapstick films) and Grammy Award-winning Edie Brickell (the singer-songwriter formerly of the New Bohemians) comes Bright Star. The new musical earned five Tony nominations in 2016 and was hailed by the New York Times as "a shining achievement." Directed by Tony-winner Walter Bobbie and inspired by a real event, this original musical tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South in the 1920s and ‘40s. Propelled by an ensemble of onstage musicians and dancers, the show visits Charlotte later this month, spinning a rich tapestry of deep emotion, beautiful melodies and powerfully moving performances.
BRUCE HORNSBY AND THE NOISEMAKERS, July 14
Any dad will appreciate this throwback as the man known for some of the most popular songs of the 80s, notably “The Way It Is,” comes to Charlotte. The icon’s work has expanded across the radio waves in a creative American format for almost three decades. Hornsby has pursued a personal musical path, focusing on projects that have sparked his creative interest, including collaborations with the Grateful Dead, Spike Lee, Ricky Skaggs, Don Henley, Ornette Coleman, Bob Dylan, Bela Fleck, Bonnie Raitt, Pat Metheny and Robbie Robertson. Hornsby’s performance on July 14 will offer a glimpse of a restless spirit who continues to push forward into exciting new musical terrain.
THE BOOK OF MORMON, July 24-29
From the creators of South Park comes a musical comedy that does not allow anyone in the audience to take themselves too seriously. This outrageous musical comedy follows the misadventures of a mismatched pair of missionaries, sent halfway across the world to spread the Good Word. Now with standing room only productions in London, on Broadway, and across North America, THE BOOK OF MORMON has truly become an international sensation and visits Charlotte this summer! Contains explicit language.
CHARLOTTE SQUAWKS - May 31-June 24
Saturday Night Live meets Broadway meets our beloved Queen City in Charlotte Squawks. Celebrating the 14th edition of Squawks, the creative team of Mike Collins and Brian Kahn collaborated with the area's most talented performers to riff on pop-culture, sports, life and politics both local and national. We could tell you what you should expect, but part of the fun of the show is anticipating who and what will be squawked!
