An Evening with Spyro Gyra & The Yellowjackets

Dec 14 , 2013 · KNIGHT THEATER at Levine Center for the Arts

$42.50 - $65.50

Presented by: The Jazz Diva

In music, time flies, styles unstoppably evolve, and bands come and go. But there are also rare stable, forward moving forces on the contemporary jazz scene -Spyro Gyra and the Yellowjackets. For more than three decades, Spyro Gyra and The Yellowjackets have maintained a position at the forefront of modern jazz.

In their earliest days, Spyro Gyra took their cues from Weather Report and Return to Forever – bands whose creative flights were fueled by a willingness to do things that had never been done before. “I believed that we were springing from what Weather Report did,” says Beckenstein. “I never thought in commercial terms. I just thought they were the next step in the evolution of jazz, and that we would be part of it.” Morning Dance, released thirty years ago in 1979, included the title track which became a Top 40 single and proved to be the band’s breakout song. To this day, the Calypso inspired track is still in heavy rotation on contemporary jazz stations.

The Yellowjackets, originally brought together in 1977 to back up guitarist Robben Ford on his solo debut album, keyboardist Russell Ferrante, bassist Jimmy Haslip and drummer Ricky Lawson recognized a musical affinity with each other and began to forge their own identity. Soon afterward, Yellowjackets was born. Throughout their storied 32-year history, the Yellowjackets have undergone numerous lineup changes, never failing to rise to the inevitable challenges of adjustment. The Yellowjackets soldiered on with a professionalism that has resulted in 17 GRAMMY® nominations – with two wins – countless sold-out tours, and worldwide critical acclaim.
