Blumenthal Arts Announces Nominees & Finalists for 2026 Blumey Awards
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Blumenthal Arts is excited to announce the nominees and finalists for the 2026 Blumey Awards, recognizing outstanding achievement in high school musical theater, celebrating students, educators, and productions shaping the future of the arts in Charlotte and beyond.
Presented by Bank of America, the annual awards honor achievements onstage and behind the scenes, and give students access to meaningful training, mentorship, and networking. They also offer the opportunity to perform on one of Charlotte’s biggest theatrical stages.
Free to participate, 59 Charlotte-area schools (up from 54 last year) submitted a full-length spring musical produced during the academic year for consideration. Trained judges with industry experience attend each production, with a panel of three professionals evaluating performances using a standardized scoring process and providing notes to the schools.
“With every Blumenthal Arts season, we’re reminded just how much talent exists in our schools, and how important it is to create space for that talent to be taken seriously,” said Tom Gabbard, CEO of Blumenthal Arts. “This program gives students the chance to be challenged, celebrated, and connected to something bigger than their own production. Over the years, we’ve seen it become a real launch point for young artists in Charlotte and beyond.”
The program includes free masterclasses, workshops and personalized training for student performers, designers, and stage managers. Students selected for the top acting categories also take part in Blumey Bootcamp, a multi-day program led by industry professionals ahead of final auditions and the annual ceremony.
“The Blumey Awards are an accelerant. It is fuel to ensure that theater in our schools receives the resources, attention, and accolades it deserves,” said Andie Maloney, Chief Education Officer at Blumenthal Arts. “It celebrates the hard work and talent of thousands of students and educators. It inspires the next generation of creatives to pursue their dreams, and gives them tools, networks, and resources to do so with confidence.”
The Blumeys have served as a springboard for students pursuing careers in theater, with alums going on to study and work in the industry at the collegiate and professional levels. Each year, the program’s Best Actor and Best Actress will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City to represent Charlotte at the National High School Musical Theater Awards, also known as the Jimmy Awards. There, they join top student performers from across the country to train, perform and compete in one of the highest honors in high school musical theater.
New this year, the awards introduced the Blumey Inspire Scholars program, designed to expand access for students whose schools do not participate in the Blumey Awards. Through this initiative, students gain access to masterclasses, workshops, audition feedback, the Blumey Bootcamp, and ceremony performance opportunities. It opens the door for more students to benefit from the program’s educational and artistic opportunities.
The 2026 Blumey Awards ceremony will take place Sunday, May 17, at Belk Theater. For updates and additional information, visit blumenthalarts.org/education/blumey-awards.
