Internship Program

Company: Blumenthal Arts

Overview

Internships at Blumenthal Arts (BA) are designed to offer hands-on learning experiences to college and graduate students considering careers within arts management. Our desire is to equip students with a robust skillset and provide them with professional experience to carry into their careers. Internships with BA are considered full-time and require a minimum commitment of ten weeks by intern candidates. For internship purposes, full-time is considered 20-30 hours a week.  Pending the needs of individual departments, flexibility in daily or weekly work schedule may be required. Interns may be required to work evenings and weekends, depending on the department's needs. To assist full-time interns with living expenses, BA offers paid internships. Housing is not provided.

In addition to work experiences overseen by a BA department leader, interns may be required to attend semi-regular meetings with other interns and BPA’s Education Special Programs Manager to participate in career preparation and other learning activities.

Interns may be eligible for college credit upon completion of BA’s internship program. Interns who intend to receive credit for their internship experience are responsible for meeting registration requirements of their respective colleges and for informing BA’s Special Education Programs Manager of necessary evaluation and/or other forms to be completed by appropriate BA personnel.

Potential Internship Responsibilities by Department:

Interns can tailor their experience to meet their educational needs. For this reason, interns can concentrate their experience on one area of focus, two - three areas of focus, or receive a more comprehensive experience that would allow them to learn from multiple departments across their 10 weeks providing a more wholistic view of art administration. Due to organizational needs, we are unable to facilitate a Marketing Intern during the Fall 2025 Term.

Human Resources

Interns will be involved with aspects of various human resource activities for Blumenthal Arts, acquiring a limited working knowledge of various HR areas including talent acquisition, compliance, benefits, and employee engagement. All majors are welcome to apply.

Education

Interns support the implementation and execution of programs and events in our venues and out in the community frequently in tandem with touring Broadway productions. Education interns interact directly with the Charlotte community from elementary school through senior populations. Some of the education flagship programs include Junior Theater Celebration, The Blumey Awards, and LEAP (visit www.blumenthalarts.org/education  to learn more). All majors are welcome to apply; arts administration and/or events management concentrations encouraged.

Technical Theater/Production Management

The Technical Production Management Internship at Blumenthal Arts offers hands-on experience in show planning and execution, with a focus on technical coordination and production leadership. Interns will support advancing shows, managing crews, and ensuring smooth technical operations — while occasionally assisting with lighting, audio, and equipment maintenance. Ideal for candidates with technical theater experience who are interested in the management side of live event production.

Programming

Interns will become more familiar with one or more of the following areas: contract negotiation, artist and client relationship management, long-term and short-term season planning, and show offers. Responsibilities may include departmental reporting, budget updates, creation of show offers, contract mark-ups, and artist research. All majors welcome to apply.

Community Impact and Partnership

Get hands-on experience with the exciting world of fundraising for the performing arts. As an intern, you'll explore a variety of projects that support the creative work we do—whether it’s helping with annual and planned giving efforts, assisting on major fundraising campaigns, or diving into research to uncover new donor opportunities. You’ll gain insight into how arts organizations raise the support they need, and you’ll be part of making that happen. We are looking for candidates who are curious, collaborative, and eager to learn. All majors are encouraged to apply.

Event Management/Operations

The Event Management Intern supports the coordination and execution of live events by assisting with logistics, client communication, and on-site operations. This role works closely with the Event Management team to gather and distribute event details, help prepare spaces, and ensure a smooth experience for artists, clients, and guests. Interns will gain hands-on experience in venue operations, cross-department collaboration, and real-time problem-solving. Evening and/or weekend availability may be required based on event schedules.
