Front of House Usher - Part Time

Position Summary 

Under regular supervision, the Front of House Usher is responsible for delivering effective customer service during events and performances, ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, and safety rules. This position plays a crucial role in maintaining a positive experience for patrons, supporting the smooth operation of events, and contributing to the overall safety and success of Blumenthal Performing Arts. This position requires night and weekend work. The Front of House Usher reports to the Director of Front of House Operations. During events, the Front of House Usher reports to the House Manager and other event supervisory staff.  

Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Assist in ensuring compliance with general center and safety policies and procedures by both patrons and staff. 

  • Accurately read and interpret theater tickets to facilitate efficient patron entry. 

  • Provide high-quality customer service by responding to inquiries, assisting patrons, and addressing complaints. Assist latecomers according to policies and procedures and attend to patrons with special needs. 

  • Maintain a clean work area before, during, and after events. Report maintenance or housekeeping needs to the Floor Supervisor/House Manager. 

  • Act as a searcher, disabled person’s aid, traffic director, or leader during emergencies, ensuring a safe and efficient evacuation process for both fire and non-fire emergencies. 

  • Attend various staff meetings and trainings as required. 

  • Refer to policy and procedure manuals, safety plans, floor plans, etc., to ensure accurate execution of duties. 

  • Operate various equipment such as telephones, assisted listening devices, two-way radios, ropes/stanchions, wheelchairs, coat check equipment, flashlights, etc. 

  • Interact and communicate effectively with various groups and individuals, including supervisors, co-workers, volunteers, performers, and patrons. 

Qualifications

Education and Experience  

  • Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by two years of customer service experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. 

  • Previous experience as an usher is preferred. 

  • Previous live event experience is preferred.  

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities  

  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. 

  • Friendly and professional demeanor. 

  • Ability to remain calm and composed under pressure.  

  • Knowledge of basic theater etiquette and procedures is a plus.  

  • Bilingual in English and any other language is a plus.  

 

Physical Requirements 

  • See and read tickets in low level lighting 

  • Stand for long periods of time (1-4 hours) 

  • Walk up and down stairs 

  • Walk up and down incline 

  • Work in high levels including the balcony  

  • Respond quickly in emergency situations
